Columbus Inn Nearby

Columbus, located on the Platte River in central Nebraska, flourished as a railroad town in the early 20th century. As railroads were replaced by highways, Columbus slowly declined but has since been revived as a tourist destination thanks to its unique history and architecture.

The town was founded as the terminus of the first transcontinental railroad. The tracks were laid through what was then called the "Great American Desert," and Columbus became an important transportation hub for settlers heading west. The town grew rapidly and soon boasted a number of hotels, stores, and churches.

The first Platte riverboat arrived in Columbus from Omaha. The boats were used to transport passengers and cargo down the Platte River to Kansas City. Over time, more boats arrived and Columbus became known as "the Venice of the West."
